IN DECEMBER OF 1892, two blocks North of our present location, the birth of First Baptist Church took place. The town of North Wilkesboro was only 2 years old and First Baptist Church was, at that time, the only established church in the community. The church soon became too small to accommodate its members. So, in 1912, a new sanctuary was built on the corner of D and Sixth Streets, the site of the Wayland Building. Members and friends of the church donated timber, time and money. Abundant faith was revealed as the church began its growth into the mission-minded, worshipping membership of today. The present sanctuary was build, again because of needed additional facilities, and was occupied in 1965.

Through growing pains and anticipation, First Baptist Church is an example of God's command to us?to go and teach. When we do this, growth happens. This has led to a plan for the renovation of our present Educational Building. First Baptist Church is being led into the 21st century with the growth of its membership, mission activities, and involvement. Our heritage has served us well. May we be faithful in serving the next generation.
